巴东是印度尼西亚西苏门答腊省首府及该省的最大城市，位于该省西海岸。 在十六世纪时，巴东是当地的贸易中心。在十六、十七世纪时，人们在此处种植胡椒，并销售到印度、葡萄牙、英国及荷兰。1663年时，荷兰人攻占此地，并在1680年建立了贸易站。后来巴东曾经二度成为英国的属地。由于巴东有金矿矿脉，自1780年起，金就成为巴东最重要的贸易商品，后来金矿开采完了，主要贸易品则为咖啡、盐及纺织品等。 清朝古籍《海录》作“叭当”。
