Peaceful, quiet place to get away. I was the only one on the whole island. There were lots of unique shells 349raec的完整评论

The information about accessing parts of the reserve is inadequate. Carrot Island seems to have a boardwalk but ferry express runs to an unappealing tip of the island. Need to im0rove how to visit. BWStone52的完整评论

This is just 200 meters from the water front of Beaufort. You can take a boat over to the Reserve and walk around or you can hope to view the ponies from a restaurant along the boardwalk in Beaufort Harold J的完整评论
What boat rides are available right now through the end of September? When you arrive on the island, is walking the only way to get around? I cannot walk a lot so what do I do?

Hi, We used Island Ferry Adventures, I'm sure you can check their schedules online. When we arrived on the island, yes, walking is the only way to get around. Also, there are trails, but they are very rough and wild, so you need good shoes and need to be able to walk in/around hilly and marshy areas. If you don't want to go on the actual island, I know some of the ferry's cruise around them and don't stop, so you can see from a short distance.
Are the horses on the island all of the time? Or is it possible that all could be on Shackleford Island?

The horses on Carrot Island and Shackleford Banks are separate herds. There are about 35 of them that are resident all the time on Carrot Island. They are there all year long. When it is colder or the weather is particularly nasty or when there isn't much for them to forage to eat, they tend to hang out in some of the maritime forest areas, and thus are harder to see. In spring and summer they are frequently seen along Taylor's Creek at the water's edge nibbling the spartina.

There are no tours per se ever. What you can do is go to Front Street in Beaufort. Near the Maritime Museum on the water side of the street the WaterBug might be running, especially in a weekend. They will do a narrated tour by by small boat on Taylor's Creek (between Front Street and Carrot Island - the Rachel Carson Reserve). Honestly? The best way to see the Rachel Carson reserve and the wild ponies is to go by kayak. October is low season. If you don't have your own kayak, there are rentals available in Front Street, but I don't know the availability in October. At the far end of Front Street (about 2 miles away from downtown) is a public boat launch. You can kayak for less than 5 minutes to the island. There is a boardwalk there. I recommend walking all over the island. You're more likely tthan find the ponies towards the western end. But kayaking, especially around high tide will let you get relatively close to them. It's okay to beach a kayak and then walk in search of them. I have a home literally 100 yards from the Rachel Carson Reserve. I have kayaked there for 20 years and never have had a problem. Enjoy your trip. The weather usually is good, but there are few tourists, therefore few amenities like access to the reserve. One last bit of advice. If the kayak option doesn't work and no boats will like the Water Bug is running, check the NC Maritime Museum's website for programs a couple of months before you go. Sometimes they do have naturalist led trips to Rachel Carson, but not often. Bottom line is there are no regularly scheduled trips. However, if you can get there on your own, it is well worth the effort. Just wear closed shoes as there are small cacti (and horse droppings) and carry everything you will need as there is nothing there but nature.
