Vladimir Tumanov wrote a fantasy fiction book over 20 years ago to help his son with math. The book would later be translated to Turkish and become extremely popular among children in that country.

Students can worry about curve-fitting to sinusoidal graphs in advanced math later. In grade school they need strong concept building. These books work best if an adult is reading with the children.
