Ubisoft has announced that XDefiant, its multiplatform free-to-play Call of Duty-like FPS, is shutting down in June despite the game’s executive producer saying that it wasn’t dying and was “doing well” in September.

Ubisoft will shut down its free-to-play shooter XDefiant, Ubisoft announced Tuesday. Servers will remain on until June 3, 2025, but the game will no longer be offered for download, and player registration will be closed.

"As a result, the game is too far away from reaching the results required to enable further significant investment, and we are announcing that we will be sunsetting it." Starting immediately, XDefiant registration and downloads will no longer be available.

Live service games are no sure thing — first, it was Concord, and now Ubisoft’s free-to-play FPS that only launched in May will close its doors.

Ubisoft’s XDefiant will barely celebrate its first birthday before being shut down. The company has confirmed it has begun the sunset process for the shooter starting today, which means new downloads,

Ubisoft is reportedly discontinuing XDefiant, its online first-person shooter. The company will also close its San Francisco and Osaka offices, laying off over 270 employees. The cancelation of XDefiant can be found on Ubisoft's website.
