Scientists have demonstrated a new potential treatment for bone cancer. A bioactive glass laced with a toxic metal was able to kill up to 99% of the cancer without harming healthy cells, and could even help regrow healthy bone after.

After 10 days, cancer cells exposed to media conditioned with 10 mg/mL of 4 and 5% gallium-doped glass showed decreased cell viability, to roughly 60% and less than 10%, respectively. The 20 mg/mL of 4% and 5% gallium-doped glass were the most toxic to the cancer cells, causing 60% and more than 99% cell death, respectively, after 10 days.

In laboratory tests, bioactive glasses doped with gallium oxide killed more than 99% of osteosarcoma cells, while leaving healthy human osteoblasts unharmed. This could one day form the basis of new bone cancer treatments,
