Posteriorly displaced fractures may be angulated or displaced medially or laterally. Uncommonly, direct force applied to the flexed elbow may displace the distal humerus fracture anteriorly.

Careful radiographic evaluation of patients with proximal humeral fractures is critical to accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. Anteroposterior (AP) and axillary views are mandatory.
