you should be alright. Think of them as adding chopped nuts. You will know more when you add them to the rest of the dough. You can hold back a little water and correct if needed while mixing or stirring. A good suggestion if the recipe doesn't call for the barley. If you add a large amount of pearl barley, be sure to add a little more salt.

This is my first time using barley flour, it doesn't have any gluten, and this loaf also has a lot of rye, so it's not a light loaf to be sure, rather substantial. There's room for improvement as I've only baked with it once but i can see myself returning to barley bread often in my baking repertoire. I can see how it'd compliment cookies and muffins. Got a barley sourdough starter going and should be ready soon.
