The Nervous System
The Nervous System is divided into Two Main Divisions: Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Divisions of the Nervous System
The organs of the nervous system can be divided into two groups. One group, consisting of the brain and spinal cord, forms the central nervous system (CNS). The other, composed of the nerves (bundles of axons) that connect the central nervous system to other body parts, is called the peripheral nervous system (PNS) (fi g. 9.2).
Nervous tissue consists of masse of neurons (nerve cells) and is highly cellular. AP is electrical signal that propagates (travels) along the surface of the membrane of a neuron. Neurons communicate with other neurons at synapses, which are junctions between one neuron and a second neuron or an effector cell.
The nervous system is comprised of two major parts, or subdivisions, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord. The brain is the body's "control center". The CNS has various centers located within it that carry out the sensory, motor and integration of data.
This chapter presents some basic information about the major structures of the nervous system and their in-terconnections, an area of study called neuroanatomy. It also includes a general discussion of the relationship between structure and function, an area of investigation known as functional neuroanatomy.
