The word ghutrah (Arabic: غُترَة, romanized: ḡutra) comes from the Arabic root ghatr (غتر) which means "to cover". The early pictures of Arabs invariably show them wearing turbans, and it is unclear when the keffiyeh became acceptable for the upper classes.
