Oct 2, 2004. The APTT and the PTT are the same. The Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time and the Partial Thromboplastin Time are the same--the second one's just abbreviated. You'll usually use this test for a patient who is on Heparin. The heparin protocol will call for parameters on the rate of heparin to run based on the APTT.

Here's the problem: some sources continue to only use the term PTT (not aPTT) but have "updated" the value to something around 30 - 40 (which actually is the aPTT). Others, do distinguish between the two.

IF the aPTT and PT are both drawn, further clarification of coagulation defects is possible. ie: a normal PT with an abnormal aPTT means that the defects is within the first stage of the clotting cascade.

Many IV pumps, when put on hold, will beep after two minutes, so that might help. Also, it isn't best practice to draw coag studies from a lumen that has had Heparin drip, or locking solution in it.

Therapeutic for both is 2-3 times. Heparin is measured by aPTT/PTT and the normal range is 25-41 seconds. Therapeutic is 2-3 times.
