8 inch Disc sander-backing plate - The Home Shop Machinist
Feb 21, 2010 · There's no table, no shroud. Just a dangerous (and therefore fun) open spinning disc. (I could alternately use the screw on type discs, provided I could find stiff enough backing and the arbor. McMaster has an arbor that might work, but I couldn't find a backing plate.) I was hoping to find one magical source for all my sander building needs.

I think the idea's sound. The trunnions will be mounted either side of the disc. If he were to use ordinary bearings, then 1/4 of these would stick out, right where you want to slide longer lengths of wood across the face of the disc. I have a table saw from Startrite that uses a very similar principle for tilting the blade, and it works fine.

Something I have done, a floor scrubber, they can be fitted with scotchbrite, bristle, stainless wire and all sorts, they make short work of a big plate but take some practice controlling!, tilt one way to go fwd, the other back. Useful machine, you can get abrasive pads for them too, like a floor sanding edge sander.

Scishopguy: I use a lot of delrin in my work both as bearings and structurally. In this use I don't think the friction of the delrin is that much different than that of the wheels in my other 1" sander, which appear to be ABS or high impact styrene. However after looking at stock prices, the Delrin and 6061 alum in 1" plate are basically identical!
