It is slower than ideal conditions in the ground, and more labor intensive of course, but this is half the purpose of repotting routinely.

It can't be moved for overwintering so a shelter is built around it. The pot it is in now is a newish Chinese import. The pot was located through some direct importers a while ago.

When the water gets low enough to stop pushing out the hole, too much water will still remain in the pot. The Flats are placed on rocks, utilizing capillary action again. The holes in mesh are 1/8in deep at most.

It was not cheap, but much less expensive than a Japanese import of the same size. Ron Lang is arguably the best potter for larger bonsai pots.

Grow slowly - put in right-sized bonsai pot, repot only as needed. I think the question really comes down to "desirable bonsai traits".
