After which Excel and Word simply stopped working (would crash shortly after opening). Another program I have (Markbook by Asylum software) also stopped working in early September.

If you have Windows XP SP3, you can't run the most recent version of Office (Office 2013 / Office 365), but all earlier versions are compatible: Office 2010, Office 2007, Office 2003, ... Microsoft itself currently sells only Office 2013 / 365, so to get Office 2010, for example, you'll have to find another source, for example Amazon.
