I PREFER this game on solo, though I love playing with friends too, so yes - you can play solo, 100%. If you play with friends, you share everything - there are no private chests. You share one raft, there's no base-making, no separate rafts, etc. I just highly recommend that you do NOT play on hardmode for your first run.
