The squadron will join the Helicopter Group under the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF’s) Participation Command, which was set up in 2007 to develop and deploy air power in support of land and maritime operations.

In July 1979, 123 Squadron, was formed to train rotary wing pilots on the Bell UH-1H helicopter. The new helicopters replaced the ageing Alouette III helicopters in 1971. In 1980, 120 Squadron moved from Changi Air Base to Sembawang Air Base and became the first pioneer flying unit to be stationed there.
