In 1971, Jose Luis Saavedra, an immigrant from Mexico, began making his hot sauce recipe in California. He started Tapatio, named after his children's hometown of Guadalajara, in a small warehouse. Despite working another job, the business grew, becoming a staple in Mexican-American communities.
