A tracheopexy is a surgical procedure used to open and support the airway (windpipe) in severe tracheomalacia and some cases of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF).

Tracheopexy. Similar to an aortopexy, this procedure opens up and supports the airway by suspending the front of the tracheal wall from the back of the sternum. Sometimes the thymus gland is removed to create more space between the aorta and the sternum.
Conclusions: Posterior tracheopexy is effective in treating severe tracheomalacia with significant improvements in clinical symptoms and degree of airway collapse on bronchoscopy. Level of evidence: Level III, treatment study.

Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) happens when your trachea (airway or windpipe) and bronchial tubes (airways leading to your lungs) close down or collapse, so you have trouble breathing.
