As a grade school kid I was fortunate enough to see a few of GE’s U50 monsters rolling along my hometown KP. But they were long gone before I ever picked up a camera. Thank goodness I made certain acquaintances with railfan photographers senior to me! After meeting Mr Tom Lee in 1977 he graciously let me duplicate a few of his UP slides.

The U50 Athearn is too light, dont even own one yet, and also only has two powered trucks one on each end.as its a BB style. I have both Athearn turbines they are exactly the same setup and they will not pull squat either, solution put two or three SD or GP uints beind them and problems solved, get another U50 and double head.

I defenitely agree with you on the U50. One should hve been spared the torch, particularly one of the SP units with their multiple headlights. The SP U50s weren't scrapped until 1979 I believe. These were built 5 years before the first U50Cs and outlasted them all by 2 years.
