Seal Your Project with Dewaxed Shellac - FineWoodworking
If you are using nitrocellulose lacquer or oil-based varnishes other than polyurethane, such as Waterlox or any alkyd varnish, you can safely use the waxy amber or clear 3-lb. cut. If you’re using oil-based poly or any water-based finish, stick with SealCoat. If you’re up for it, you can also mix your own shellac using dewaxed shellac flakes.

Something like 40% varnish, 30% varnish and 30% mineral spirits. However, an oil/varnish finish is intended to go over unfinished wood.

May 31, 2006 · 2. If you are really compulsive about getting the wax out, like me, for 99.999+ dewaxed shellac, mix the shellac with mineral spirits or naphtha. Use a plastic squeeze bottle with a pointy spout closed with a small tip. A volume of mineral spriits about 25% again in volume to the shellac is about right. Shake the mixture vigorously.

If you want to use only dewaxed so that a finish coat in a different finish will adhere better, just let the shellac sit for a while in a glass jar and then pour off the clear shellac in the upper half leaving the cloudy wax containing portion in the jar.

Jan 24, 2005 · But, yes lacquer is much more resistant to alcohol. You should use dewaxed shellac if lacquer will be your final finish. If you have already used shellac with wax, get some ultra-blond dewaxed, apply one or 2 thin coats to "seal in" the wax, then a thin lacquer coat for final protection. Lacquer over shellac is a fine finish.
