In physics and engineering, the envelope of an oscillating signal is a smooth curve outlining its extremes. [1] The envelope thus generalizes the concept of a constant amplitude into an instantaneous amplitude. The figure illustrates a modulated sine wave varying between an upper envelope and a lower envelope.

The shape or "envelope" of this light curve will serve to set limiting intensities for multiple slit arrangements, assuming that all the slits are identical.
According to the superposition principle, the net displacement is simply given by the vector or the algebraic sum of the individual displacements. Interference is the combination of two or more waves to form a composite wave, based on such principle. The idea of the superposition principle is illustrated in Figure 14.1.1. (d) .
