The GE 44-ton switcher is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric between 1940 and 1956. It was designed for industrial and light switching duties, often replacing steam locomotives that had previously been assigned these chores.

The General Electric 44-tonner was a diesel-electric switcher and industrial locomotive produced between September of 1940 and October of 1956 at GE’s plant in Erie, Pennsylvania. A total of 386 of these diminutive center-cab locomotives were produced, and they saw service everywhere from the United States to Saudi Arabia.

2024年10月1日 · The earliest three 44-tonners owned by SP arrived in the fall of 1942, only two years after the first 44-ton locomotives had been produced by GE. Numbered 1900–1902, they were mostly used in Oregon during the war, and later were tried many places on the SP system.

3 天之前 · As I understand the matter, the GE 44 tonners were designed for "railroad" service, and the "45 tonner" and "50 tonner" versions were designed for Industrial users. The 44-tonners had traction motors on all four axles, while the 45/50 tonners had only one motor per truck with the other axle connected by side rods or chain drive.
