Otherwise,with a buried post when the posts rot, which they will, and if the structure isn't sound the only way you will know is if the structure starts to lean - which is not a good plan.

With that said, in my opinion, any hole worth digging for concrete should be at least 12"X12" or 12" round. Just to make a point, the posts could simply be set in the ground, using the 6X6 bottom as the bearing surface. Even not knowing your soil type, or bearing capacity.

I was searching for bases that will be used to anchor 4-ft x 4"x4" posts to concrete, and I saw this 12-gauge base for $18. I was also looking at these bases , but they seem a little flimsy. I'm thinking that, in our case, it would be better to use heavy-duty brackets and anchor screws.

I'm using the Simpson PB66Z "Galvanized Post Base" to attach my pressure treated 6x6 to the footing. The wood seems to be slightly too large to fit such that the bottom of the post rests on the metal. What's the proper way to handle this? I could pound it with a sledge hammer, shave some wood off on the two side corners, or something else?
