This immediately makes me favor the tree in the first pic because it obviously has active buds/shoots low on the stem already.

[pic inside] Yes, anything that gives the tree cold but frost free conditions until spring is your best chanse of vigour in spring. When the tree is in that conditions it will not need much water. The tray metod will rot the roots.

Apr 22, 2016 · Surely a truly bonsai suitable variety exists somewhere. I have seen a few Acer rubrum cultivars online but none that were noted for dwarf characteristics. Acer rubrum drummondii seems like a relatively promising variety to start with. I wonder if the growth would be naturally reduced to proper proportions in 50-100+ year old Acer rubrum bonsai.

Dec 28, 2017 · Most bonsai are not grown from seed, but cut down from a bigger plant. I am however growing bonsai from seed too. AExpect about 10 years to grow the basic trunk And another 10 for a crown to get a basic tree. I would say, 23 years is optimistic for the tree in the picture. Naturally, it is possible to grow such a tree.

Feb 4, 2019 · I collected it from the side of the road and it apparently had been mowed over some time in it's life and now has branches everywhere. A little less than 6 feet tall with a 3 and 1/2" base. The nebari is basically two huge roots but that is a pretty normal thing for the species. It won't be a classic bonsai for sure.

Aug 27, 2017 · Acer rubrum have stunning color, if that's what it is... There's a lot of diversity in leaf shape but I have no experience with ginnala. I probably would have picked it up too. But I haven't gotten to the point of refinement where rubrum is supposed to be a let down.
