Mission Overview - GEDI
GEDI radically improves our ability to characterize important carbon and water cycling processes, biodiversity, and habitat. GEDI was originally deployed to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2018 for a two-year mission, but has been extended twice and is still collecting data today.
Products Overview - GEDI
GEDI data products are designed to answer key science questions on the role of ecosystem structure now and in the future. GEDI science data products include footprint and gridded data sets that describe the 3D features of the Earth.
Instrument Overview - GEDI
GEDI is a full-waveform lidar instrument that makes detailed measurements of the 3D structure of the Earth’s surface. Lidar is an active remote sensing technology (the laser version of radar) which uses pulses of laser light to measure 3D structure.
ATBD Documents - GEDI
Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs) describe the physical theories, mathematical procedures and model assumptions applied in the calculation of geophysical quantities from laser altimetry measurements received by the GEDI instrument.
Timeline - GEDI
Timeline. GEDI launched to the ISS on December 5th, 2018, to begin its 2-year mission of discovery. The mission was extended twice. After a period of hibernation on the ISS from March 2023 through April 2024, GEDI has returned to its original spot on the ISS to begin collecting data for years to come.
Access - GEDI
All GEDI data products are available for free download. GEDI data products are available at different resolutions and time intervals. Data latency times (that is the time lag between when data are acquired and when a particular product is available) are given below.
GEDI Begins Its Next Journey
2023年3月27日 · On March 17th, 2023, the GEDI mission embarked on its next journey. GEDI completed its first four years on orbit and is heading into storage on the ISS. GEDI was powered down at 01:58 UTC.

Calibration/Validation - GEDI
NASA’s Land Vegetation and Ice Sensor (LVIS) plays a key role in the calibration and validation of the GEDI lidar waveform simulator and data product algorithms. LVIS is deployed post-launch along GEDI ground tracks for assessment of the quality of GEDI Level 1 to Level 4 data products.
