I have a mature mulberry tree (in addition to mango) and I've used the trimmings over the years in my fire pit but recently I had to trim it back radically due to a large broken branch. Initially I thought I'd easily have a free cord of firepit wood but I read that it's a very good wood for smoking.

May 18, 2011. #2. i have used mulberry before and it's a good wood. mulberry is similar to apple, but it (as every wood) has it's own smell/flavor. i didn't think it was as "sweet" as apple and had a bit of and earthy flavor to it, but i like that kind of stuff. worked really good on poultry.

Take a 1' piece of 1'' or 3/4'' copper pipe using a big hammer drive the pipe into the trunk of the tree as close to the ground as you can. Try to get at least 6" of the pipe into the trunk of the tree.Cut the pipe off flush to the tree trunk.

Mulberry is light, and good with sausage, chicken, etc. I read on another forum, a guy tried and said it had a mild/mild-heavy flavor. He mentioned it was similar to a light "grape".

Other vines that are similar in appearance don't have these rootlets. Check the base of the tree where the vine would be the oldest and largest for this characteristic. As for smoking meat with mulberry, it's good.
