The Developmental EEG: Premature, Neonatal, Infant, and Children
The indications for the conventional neonatal EEG include assessment of age and maturity; identification of neonatal seizures and neonatal status epilepticus; evaluation of neonatal encephalopathy and focal abnormalities; and assessment of response to treatment or to aid neurologic prognosis.
We focus specifically on normal state changes, background features, graphoelements (or named neonatal EEG features), seizures, and rhythmic or periodic patterns. Standardized descriptions of the behavioral state and sleep-wake cycling are particularly useful in considering whether a neonatal record is normal or abnormal.
Neonates have distinctive EEG patterns that necessitate separate terminology. This document is the consensus of experts to establish stan-dardized neonatal EEG nomenclature aimed at improving consistency and facilitating collaborative research. Where evidence exists to support a particular de nition, it is noted.
