lucas420. 09-23-11 03:47 PM. 30-35 year old Schwinn Le Tour III. Hi guys! I saw this bike at the LBS and I really want it. I'm not sure the exact year of it but the owner estimated it to be 30 or 35 years old. It seems to be in very nice shape, could use new brake and shifter cables, and the rear wheel needs truing.

Vintage Schwinn. 01-21-20 01:18 AM. Acon, In 1968, Schwinn did not offer a 3 speed Schwinn Collegiate. The Collegiate was a 5 speed from 1964 until the very late seventies. The ladies Schwinn Breeze would have been available with the 3 speed that would have had the same essential look of a Collegiate....same tire size etc.

Old 5 speed set ups are about 120mm. 6 speeds about 126mm. 7 speed to 10 speed around 130mm. You can't do much with the old 5 speed spacing. 6 speed spacing can usually be increased by the 4mm necessary to handle a 7 speed cog. I've changed a few old 6 speed friction system to 7 speed indexed set ups. Sometimes just a couple of 2mm washers.

I don't think the Caliente was made in 1977. You probably have a 1987 or 1988. Its a low-end Schwinn with steel wheels. Not worth much of an investment, especially a repaint. I recently sold one in mint condition for $95. If you want something to work on without the risk of messing up a nice bike, go for it.
