There should be an aadjustable slider on the gas line to admit the air - or you may have a spider or wasp nest blocking the airflow. John. Mar 18, 2022 · I'm a newbee to RV's and this forum, but have an important question... what would cause my water heater to emit black soot? My '99 Fleetwood Flair has a Suburban propane WH, I believe. It has been working just fine, but we woke up to this sight yesterday morning.

You could have a buildup of soot in the burner, the propane pressure may not be correct, the gas orifice may be plugged up. To start off I would get an air nozzle and some safety glasses and blow out through the exhuast, you may have a good buildup of soot inside the burner, this is normally caused by the propane pressure being off.

Jul 2, 2015 · I recently noticed a soot buildup on the fiberglass above the water heater. This is almost surely the result of a clogged gas tube causing inefficient burning of the propane. It doesn't take much of a restriction to cause that, and it's often just a spider web as it was in this case.

Sep 23, 2012 · The first time I fired on the water heater this weekend, I got a belch of black sooty smoke that left an 18" plume of soot on the outside wall of my MH above the heater vent. I shut it down and had a look at the unit from outside, but couldn't see anything obviously causing this.
