Ash and Clayton recommend several ways instructors may use their framework to assess students’ reflection. One way is to use a rubric; they provide the top level of achievement for the critical thinking rubric they use for assessing articulated learning statements: Consistently avoids typographical, spelling and grammatical errors.
In order to use written reflections as tools for measurable assessment, faculty must decide what the criteria are by which they will assess reflection and the levels of mastery of that skill. Developing a rubric to assess reflection can help crystalize these agreements.
What is Reflection? Reflection is a thinking process that occurs before, during and/or after situations with the purpose of developing greater understanding of oneself and events so that future encounters can be improved. Response demonstrates a general reflection on, and personalization of, the theories, concepts, and/or strategies presented in the course materials to date. Viewpoints and interpretations are supported. Appropriate examples are provided, as applicable.
Relevance: The learning experience being reflected upon is relevant and meaningful to student and course learning goals. Analysis: The reflection moves beyond simple description of the experience to an analysis of how the experience contributed to student understanding of self, others, and/or course concepts.
