Cherry is one of my favorite woods to work with. The smell alone is worth the time to build with it not to mention the beautiful patina the wood acquires over time.

About 40 feet of it was over 40+ inches. That was 4 years ago and we still have a price that about 8' by 36" that we haven't gotten to yet.

But it is commonly Prunus avium which is a European species that has naturalised to the States and other parts of the world. The wood is similar to Black cherry (Prunus serotina) but doesnt have the same rich red 'cherry' colour. It tends to be more of a brown tone.

The lenticels, horizontal lines in the bark are always prominent throughout it's life. Also, some areas have cherry birch (black birch) that may be confused. On all but new growth, most leaves will have brown hardwood leaf spots. The bark is rough, similar to a live oak but with shorter fissures. Break off a twig and it should smell really odd.

I had it bucked and brought up to my "wood pile" area, and have been hand splitting away on the larger rounds. It's just a beautiful colored wood. So how long does green cherry wood take to dry.

WEBDec 11, 2012 · A year or so ago a co-worker told me he cut down a nice cherry tree to make room for pasture. He asked me if I wanted it and I said "yeah!". He said he would bring it to work. He brought in a 6' cherry log about 7" diameter. We picked it up and put it in the bed of my truck. It had a hollow spot in the middle.
