After a week of use, the radio quit transmitting on 2 meter. And while the online store I bought it from wanted to just replace it, I was fortunate enough to get a full refund. In the end, I saved up the extra money and got the Yaesu FT-8900R which worked great up until I used for a trade in on an FTM-100DR at a Hamfest.

I have 2 FT-8900s, know them very well and of course compare the TH-9800 with them. My first impression was – wow, what Yaesu did not manage to realize with the FT-8900 – TYT did! It even covers 11 m and provides 6.25 & 8.33 KHz steps.

Biggest problem with the TH-9800 was the receive front end: it was always overloading. Is was a constant battle. I also lacked a data port for using FLdigi. It just "felt" like junk compared to my other Kenwood/Icom/Yaesu radios. It just had that cheap feel, that's difficult to explain.
